The calls for help from all over India are from those trying to come to terms with the loss of a family member due to COVID-19. And Pallium India, a non-Governmental organisation headquartered in Thiruvananthapuram, is helping them overcome the numbing grief with the help of Sukh-Dukh, a helpline that provides counselling in eight Indian languages.

** Snapdeal creates platform to connect patients with plasma donors

E-commerce firm Snapdeal on Monday launched a new platform which can be used to connect COVID-19 patients with potential plasma donors.

The platform, called ‘Sanjeevani’, is accessible via website as well as mobile application. Patients and donors can register themselves with their mobile numbers/email ids and provide relevant information like blood group, location, age and donor recovery date.

** Ranchi girl to study at Harvard University

17-year-old Seema Kumari bags full scholarship for undergraduate course.

A girl from a Jharkhand village is preparing for study at Harvard University unlike many of her contemporaries in the area who are usually married off early.

Seema Kumari, aged 17, from Dahu village under Ormanjhi block of Ranchi district, has earned a full scholarship for pursuing an undergraduate course at Harvard University (Cambridge, Massachusetts) and plans to leave for the US in August.

“Not only that, Seema also got selected in some other well known universities and institutions like Ashoka University, Middlebury College and Trinity College,” said Franz Gastler, who along 
with some friends had established Yuva School at Hutup village in Ormanjhi about a decade ago that groomed girls like Seema.

** Scientist enters elite US club

Sankar Ghosh, whose parental home is in EC Block, has been elected to the National Academy of Sciences.

A US-based immunologist, with family in Salt Lake, has just been elected to the National Academy of Sciences, a prestigious institution established under a charter signed by President Abraham Lincoln in 1863.

Sankar, whose parental home is in EC Block, is a professor and head of the microbiology and immunology department of Columbia University. His research is on the immune system and has been critical in the understanding of and treatment of inflammatory diseases such as arthritis, colitis and dermatitis.

“Since the news of the virus erupted in March 2020, I had been thinking on these lines. And in three months it happened. If everything goes well, our solution will actually get implemented in a month or two in India.”

** Drug 2-DG will work wonders in fighting coronavirus, says Ex-CCMB director Rakesh Mishra

Former Director of Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB), Dr Rakesh Mishra, said that 2-deoxy-D-glucose (2-DG) drug would do wonders in fighting against mild and severe Covid-19 cases.

This anti Covid-19 drug developed by Institute of Nuclear Medicine and Allied Sciences (INMAS), a Defence Research and Development Organisation along with Dr Reddy’s Laboratories, with the help of CCMB has been approved by the Drug Controller General of India.

** India topped 2020 vehicle imports into South Africa despite COVID-19 impact: Report

India was the top country of origin for vehicle imports into South Africa despite the lengthy COVID-19 lockdowns and overall declines in vehicle sales in 2020, according to the latest 2021 auto report.

The Automotive Export Manual report released here on Friday by the Automotive Industry Export Council said that India has been established by several global brands as a production hub for entry-level and small vehicles, and most of the vehicles imported from India fell into these categories.

Volkswagen’s Polo Vivo was the only vehicle in these segments that was manufactured locally in South Africa in 2020.
