A new species of fruit fly discovered for the first time has been named after Siruvani in the Western Ghats

A fruit fly has created a buzz with its maiden show in Siruvani, a biodiversity hotspot of the Western Ghats. It turns out to be a new species that has been reported, named, and documented for the first time ever. The fruit fly is now scientifically named as Euphranta siruvani, after the place where it was first collected.

A 12th Century stone idol of Lord Ganesh has been unearthed at a sleepy village of Motupalli in Prakasam district.

Giving details of the discovery, E. Sivanagi Reddy, archaeologist and CEO of Pleach India Foundation, said Siripudi Venkateswaralu discovered the idol while he was tilling his farm on Thursday.

** ITBP team scales twin peaks in Ladakh, names one of them ‘Nurbu Wangdus’

The mountaineering team of Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) has successfully scaled two unnamed mountains in Eastern Ladakh and named one of them ‘Nurbu Wangdus Peak’, in memory of ITBP mountaineer late Nurbu Wangdus, who died during an avalanche in October 2019, an ITBP official said here on Saturday.

“The 20-member expedition team, including four women, was led by ITBP IG of the North-West sector, Lhari Dorjee Lhatoo, which also comprised members of the Ladakh Police. The team successfully summited the twin peaks at a height of 6,250 metres and 6,099 metres on Eastern Ladakh borders on September 28 and October 6, respectively,” the force said in a statement.

** 8-year-old from Kurnool scripts history, becomes youngest to scale Mount Elbrus

Gandham Bhuvan Jai has become the youngest to scale Mount Elbrus, the highest peak in Europe and one of the seven summits. Bhuvan, at the age of eight years and three months, along with two other mountaineers, reached the summit of Mt Elbrus (5642 mtrs) on September 18.

Bhuvan is a class III student hailing from Kurnool district. His father Gandham Chandrudu is an IAS officer. The two others who were a part of the expedition are Anmish Varma from Vizag and K Sankaraiah from Anantapur.

** Sikkim declares ‘Katley’ as state fish

The Sikkim government has declared ‘Cooper Mahseer’ locally named ‘Katley’ as the state fish, an official of the Fisheries department said.

The official said the state government has declared Neolissochilus hexagonolepis commonly known as Copper Mahseer and locally named as ‘Katley’ as a state fish to highlight the importance of the fish and to give emphasis to its conservation measures.

A 70-year-old resident of Pudupalayam in Avinashi, R Gurusamy has left 45 acres of his land in the village for the spotted deer to graze on for over 20 years.
