An Indian scientist based in Abu Dhabi has been awarded the prestigious Sheikh Mubarak bin Mohammed Prize for discovering 11 species of insects.

Dr Anitha Saji, scientist at the Environment Agency — Abu Dhabi (EAD), said insects are an important component of biodiversity and crucial for ecological balance.

Sarla Thukral’s soaring achievements have paved the way for generations of Indian women to turn their dreams of flight into reality, Google said in a statement.

Sarla Thukral, the first Indian woman to ever fly an aircraft, was honoured by Google on August 8, her 107th birth anniversary, with a unique doodle that showcased the extraordinary achievement. The doodle was illustrated by artist Vrinda Zaveri. Thukral left such a lasting legacy for women in aviation that Google decided to run the doodle this year in honour of her 107th birthday,” the company said while explaining the doodle art for today.

Noted Odia fiction writer Paramita Satpathy will get the prestigious Sarala Puraskar for her novel ‘Abhipreta Kala’.

The annual Sarala Puraskar, instituted by eminent Odia industrialist Bansidhar Panda and his wife Ila Panda in 1980, has been continuously awarded by the Indian Metals Public Charitable Trust, according to a statement on Thursday.

She plays a pivotal role of ‘Romila’ who is an author, opposite Madhu Bhau (essayed by Jitendra Joshi) in the series ‘Cartel’. The actress will be performing a pole dance in one of the sequences.

An Indian scientist has developed human-based models to study neuron development and neuro-developmental disorders such as autism which can help design treatment strategies for such brain disorders.

Yogita K. Adlakha, a recipient of INSPIRE Faculty fellowship instituted by the Department of Science and Technology (DST), has achieved this feat, the DST said on Wednesday.

INSPIRE — that stands for Innovation in Science Pursuit for Inspired Research Programme — is a scheme by the DST for attracting talent towards science.
