** Nikhat Zareen: Indian wins gold at Women’s World Boxing Championship

India’s Nikhat Zareen has won the Women’s World Boxing Championships in Turkey, becoming only the fifth Indian woman to be crowned world champion.

The boxer beat Thailand’s Jitpong Jutamas 5-0 in the flyweight division of the championship on Thursday.

“Am I trending on Twitter?” an elated Zareen asked at the press conference after her win.

This is India’s first gold medal at the championship since Olympic boxer Mary Kom won here in 2018.

** Archery World Cup 2022 stage 2 – Indian Women’s Compound and Recurve Team won Bronze

The Indian men’s compound team of Abhishek Verma, Aman Saini and Rajat Chauhan stunned a formidable South Korean team to reach the final at the archery World Cup 2022 stage 2 in Gwangju on Thursday.

The women’s compound team comprising Avneet Kaur, Muskan Kirar and Priya Gurjar, meanwhile, secured a bronze.

The men’s team, who had won gold at the Archery World Cup 2022 Stage 1 event held in Turkey last month, began the day by beating Italy 235-229 in the first round before ousting a strong USA team 234-228 in the quarter-finals.

India will face France in Saturday’s final in what will be a replay of the gold medal match from the Stage 1 World Cup from last month. India won the contest 232-230 at the Turkey meet.

The women’s team, meanwhile, received a first round bye and then beat fourth-seeded Chinese Taipei 228-226 in the quarters to set up a semis clash against the top seeded hosts.

Up against the other losing semi-finalists Turkey in the bronze medal playoff, the Indian trio overturned a late deficit to win a thriller 232-231 to claim a podium spot.

Meanwhile, Recurve Women’s Team of Ridhi, Komalika Bari & Ankita Bhakat defeated Team Chinese Taipei (6-2) to win Bronze Medal.

Indians continue fine run at Suhl Junior World Cup

Sift Kaur Samra came up with a strong performance to beat Julie Johannessen of Norway 17-9 in the 50-metre rifle 3-position event in the Junior World Cup shooting in Suhl, Germany, on Monday.

Qualifying on top with 588, along with Ashi Chouksey, Sift conceded the top position to Julie in the second stage of the competition, before stepping it up when gold was at stake. Ashi had been pipped by 0.2 point for the gold contest by Sift, and thus had to settle for the
bronze.

In junior men’s 25-metre rapid fire pistol, Anish Bhanwala was beaten to the gold 32-28 by Yan Chesnel. While Vijayveer Sidhu came up with the bronze, Adarsh Singh could not make it to the medal contest from the second stage.

Interestingly, the three Indians were far too superior to the rest of the field in the qualification stage. Anish, in fact, had topped with 584, which was 13 points better than that of the eventual gold
medallist.

There was another silver for India in the junior men’s 50-metre rifle 3-position team event. Italy beat India 16-12, pulling ahead from the second stage after India had topped qualification with a 16-point margin.

With three more days of competition to follow, India was on top with 10 gold, 12 silver and three bronze medals. Italy was second with four gold and three bronze, while France was third with two gold and four bronze.AdvertisingAdvertising

** Andhra Pradesh: The golden girl : Goldsmith’s daughter bags six gold medals

Daggolu Supraja, an Electrical an Electronics Engineering graduate of Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University Anantapur, bagged six gold medals at the 12th Convocation of the University on Saturday. Incidentally she is the daughter of a goldsmith Siva Prasad hailing from Nellore town.

While Ms. Supraja was in her final year of engineering, her father passed away and mother Saroja is a homemaker. Despite financial constraints, she completed her graduation in flying colours by bagging the best engineering student gold medal, best outgoing girl student in all branches, and best academic performance.

She not only topped her EEE branch with 9.14 CGPA score, but also topped students from all the departments in the university. Receiving the gold medals and degree certificate from the Governor was an ecstatic experience for her and parents’ dream fulfilled, she said

** 24th Summer Deaflympics | Shuttler Jerlin Anika wins three gold medals

The badminton player has won several medals for the country at national and international level events

J. Jerlin Anika of Madurai has won the gold medal in the women’s singles badminton event in the ongoing 24th Summer Deaflympics at Caxias do Sul in Brazil. She also won the gold medal at the mixed doubles badminton event and the team badminton event.

Jerlin Anika defeated K. Neudolt of Austria to secure the gold medal in the single’s event. In the mixed doubles event, Jerlin Anika and Abhinav Sharma won the medal by defeating Boon and Teo of Malaysia. She was part of the Indian badminton team which defeated team Japan 3-1 to win the gold medal.

The badminton player has won several medals for the country at national and international level events. She is participating in her second Deaflympics. Earlier, she participated in the 2017 Deaflympics held at Samsun in Turkey. She was the youngest player at the event.

** The Indian Express journalists win ACJ investigative journalism award

Prema Sridevi and Himanshu Kala won the K P Narayana Kumar Memorial Award for Social Impact Journalism for their documentary feature film on manual scavengers, produced by The Probe.

Senior Editor Shyamlal Yadav and Mumbai Resident Editor Sandeep Singh of The Indian Express were declared winners of the Asian College of Journalism’s Award for Investigative Journalism on Tuesday for their reports on the Ayodhya land deals published in December 2021. The winners were declared at the college’s annual convocation of 2022 batch.

Yadav has won the award for the second time, previously winning it in 2017 for his 2016 story on fraud in the Jan Dhan accounts.

“The winning entry titled ‘Ayodhya land deals’, published in The Indian Express newspaper in December 2021, investigates the wrongdoings by families of some public officials who bought land after the apex court verdict, within the 5-km radius of the Ram Temple site,” the college said.

** Kerala Olympic Games inaugurated

KOA honours Mary Kom with lifetime achievement award.

Kerala Sports Minister V. Abdurahiman inaugurated the first Kerala Olympic Games at a function held at the University stadium here on Saturday.

The 10-day sports extravaganza will feature nearly 8000 athletes in 24 disciplines across four districts – Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi, Kollam and Kozhikode.

It is an ambitious initiative of Kerala Olympic Association (KOA) with aim to provide top notch competition to sportspersons in the State. Speaking on thr occasion, Mr. Abdurahiman said the State Government had earmarked ₹1200 crore for developing infrastructure in the State. He said after completion of all projects, Kerala will become the State with the best sports infrastructure in the country.

KOA’s first ever lifetime achievement award was presented to Mary Kom.by Finance Minister V.Balagopal. Olympic medal winners, P.R.Sreejesh, Bajrang Poonia, Ravi Dahiya were also felicitated. The KOA also honoured sportspersons from Kerala who took part in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Former director Bhaskar Ramamurthi presented Lifetime Achievement Award

A total of 22 alumni were honoured with the Distinguished Alumnus Award for their achievement in industry and academia during the 63rd Institution Day celebrations of the Indian Institute of Technology Madras.

The celebrations were held on Tuesday in the physical mode after two years owing to COVID-19 pandemic.

Chief guest Lakshmi Narayanan, former Vice Chairman of Cognizant Technologies, said the need of the hour is “collaborative research between industry and academia which can result in phenomenal outcomes.” He praised the institute for “pioneering upskilling of virtual education”, its virtual B.Sc degree programme and innovative platforms such as NPTEL that are benefiting the community.” The institute’s research park had fostered an innovative ecosystem, he said.

He also presented the Lifetime Achievement Award to former director Bhaskar Ramamurthi. It was during his tenure that the institute topped in several national-level rankings besides being selected as Institution of Eminence.

Director V. Kamakoti said the pandemic had not stopped the institute’s growth – be it in research, consultancy and execution of corporate social responsibility projects; placements, internships or patents filed.

Biocon Biologics Limited (BBL), a subsidiary of Biocon on Tuesday said it has bagged a three-year contract valued at $90 million from the Malaysian government for the supply of recombinant human insulin brand Insugen.

Biocon Sdn Bhd., a subsidiary of Biocon Biologics, will manufacture and supply its range of insulins to its partner Duopharma Marketing Sdn. Bhd. (DMktg), a subsidiary of Duopharma Biotech, a pharma & biotech firm in Malaysia.

** Former women’s hockey team captain Elvera Britto dies aged 81

Elvera, the eldest of the three famous Britto sisters (others are Rita and Mae), ruled the domestic circuit from 1960 to 1967, guiding Karnataka to seven national titles.

Former Indian women’s hockey team captain Elvera Britto died here on Tuesday due to old age related problems. She was 81.

She represented India against Australia, Sri Lanka and Japan.

In 1965, Elvera became only the second woman hockey player to be conferred with the Arjuna Award after Anne Lumsden (1961).
