** 1900 to 2016: India’s history, medal winners at Olympics

India have won 28 medals at the Olympic Games.

The first modern Olympics were held in Athens, Greece, in 1896 and it took India only four years before seeing their first representation at the Summer Olympic Games. It all started for India in 1900 when they sent lone athlete Norman Pritchard to Paris where he won two medals in Men’s 200 metres and Men’s 200 metre hurdles.

India has participated in every Summer Games since then, sending their first Olympic team in 1920 comprising four athletes and two wrestlers. It was, however, not till 1928 when they saw their next medal and thus began the domination of the Indian hockey team.

** Army Chief to inaugurate Indian Army memorial in Italy

Gen. Naravane to visit U.K. and Italy this week

Army Chief Gen. Manoj Naravane will inaugurate an Indian Army memorial in the Italian town of Cassino during an official visit to U.K. and Italy from July 5-8, the Army said on Sunday.

Italy has pushed for a central role for India in the European Union’s Indo-Pacific Initiative which is congruent with India’s own vision for the region.

A four-day summit by Progressive International for Covid-19 vaccine internationalism begins on Friday. It aims at ending “the pandemic as quickly as possible by securing vaccines for all”. The summit will bring together Global South governments, politicians, healthcare workers and vaccine manufacturers from over 20 countries, following criticism of the G7’s plan by the United Nations aid chief Mark Lowcock as “not serious” and lacking “necessary urgency.”

Ahead of the WTO’s ministerial conference later this year, the government has appointed a private person Aashish Chandorkar as ‘Counsellor’ in India’s Permanent Mission in the World Trade Organisation for three years.

The maiden Indian Navy and European Union Naval Force (EUNAVFOR) exercise began in the Gulf of Aden on Friday. A total of five warships from four navies were participating in the two-day exercise, the Navy said.

** Indian soldiers under U.N. mission in South Sudan get medals

The troops, stationed in Bor, Pibor and at a temporary operating base in Akobo, have engaged in a variety of activities, including civil-military cooperation

Soldiers from India and Sri Lanka serving with the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) were presented medals for their contribution towards the fulfilment of the mission mandate in a challenging environment.

UNMISS Force Commander Lt Gen Shailesh Tinaikar pinned the medals on 135 Indian soldiers and 103 Sri Lankan Blue Berets from the country’s aviation unit at a ceremony held at Bor, South Sudan, on June 9.

** Volcano eruption: Indian Army in Congo assists in evacuation

As the active volcano in Congo, Mount Nyaragongo, erupted again, the Indian Army contingent under the United Nations peace keeping mission (MONUSCO) assisted in protecting civilians and U.N. officials as well as assets during the evacuation, the Army said on Sunday.

** 6 UNESCO heritage sites added in India

Six sites, including the Ganga ghats in Varanasi , temples of Kancheepuram in Tamil Nadu and the Satpura Tiger Reserve in Madhya Pradesh, have been added to India’s tentative list of UNESCO world heritage sites, Culture Minister Prahlad Singh Patel said on Wednesday.

Mr. Patel said six of the nine sites submitted by the Archaeological Survey of India had been accepted by UNESCO for inclusion in the tentative list, which is a requirement before the final nomination of any site.
