** Navy gets more reconnaissance power over Arabian Sea with new squadron

 In a significant move to strengthen the reconnaissance capability of Indian Navy towards the western seaboard, a new Naval Reconnaissance Air Squadron has been raised under the Western Naval Command (WNC) headquartered in Mumbai. 

The Navy on Monday said, “Indian Naval Air Squadron (INAS) 316, Indian Navy’s second P-8I aircraft squadron, will be commissioned on March 29 at INS Hansa, Goa, in the presence of Naval chief Admiral R Hari Kumar.”

** DRDO-developed corner shot weapon ready for induction

System bends and captures video feed saving soldiers from surprise counter attacks

A corner shot weapon system (CSWS) designed and developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is at an advanced stage of being inducted by the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and the Jammu and Kashmir police. 

The CSWS is a special purpose weapon designed by the Armament Research and Development Establishment (ARDE), Pune. It can engage targets located around the corners as the system bends and captures video feed thus saving soldiers from any surprise counter attack and is best suited for urban, close quarter situations

** INS Valsura awarded President’s colour

It is the Navy’s premier technological training establishment

President Ram Nath Kovind on Friday presented the President’s colour to INS Valsura, the Navy’s premier technological training establishment.

The President’s Colour is bestowed on a military unit in recognition of the exceptional service rendered to the nation, both in peace and in war.

‘Nishan Adhikari’ Lt. Arun Singh Sambyal received the President’s Colour on behalf of the unit in an impressive parade, the Navy said. A special postal cover was also released to commemorate the occasion.

“The award ceremony commenced with insertion of Drum Toli for Pile-of-Drums ceremony. It traces its history back to a time when soldiers on field used to arrange their drums in a pile to form an altar,” the defence spokesperson said on social media.

** Defence Minister Rajnath Singh opens R&D facility for stealth jet in Bengaluru

A seven-storeyed, 1.3 lakh sqft Flight Control System (FCS) complex for research and development of the public sector HAL’s Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) has been built in just 45 days. 

The construction started on February 1. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Thursday inaugurated the facility, housed at the Aeronautical Development Establishment (ADE), alongside Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai.

** DRDO constructs multi-storey building in 45 days; to house R&D facilities for AMCA project

India’s premier defence research institute DRDO has built a multi-storey facility for flight control system at Aeronautical Development Establishment in Bengaluru in record 45 days using in-house technology, officials said on March 17.

The seven-storey building, with a plinth area of 1.3 lakh square feet, will house research and development facilities for the development of a fifth-generation medium weight deep penetration fighter jet for the Indian Air Force (IAF).

“The DRDO has completed the construction of a multi-storey infrastructure for flight control system at ADE Bengaluru with hybrid technology consisting of conventional, pre-engineered and precast methodology in record 45 days,” said one of the officials.

** Cochin Shipyard to build Beagle class dredger for DCI

It consolidates the nation’s ‘Make in India’ mission, says Union Minister

The Dredging Corporation of India (DCI) signed a ship building agreement with the Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) in New Delhi on Thursday.

As per the agreement, the Cochin Shipyard would build the first-of-its-kind Beagle-12 trailing suction hopper dredger of 12,000 cubic-metre capacity for the DCI.

The agreement was signed in the presence of Sarbananda Sonowal, Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways and Ayush; Shripad Naik, Minister of State for Ports, Shipping and Waterways; Marten Vande Berg, Ambassador of Netherlands; and Sanjeev Ranjan, Secretary, Ports, Shipping and Waterways.

** Army institutes Chair at USI in Gen Rawat’s memory

On the eve of General Bipin Rawat’s birthday, the army on Tuesday dedicated a chair of excellence in the late chief of defence staff (CDS)’s memory at the United Service Institution of India (USI), the country’s oldest think tank founded in 1870, the army said in a statement. Rawat, who was killed in a helicopter crash last December, would have turned 64 on Wednesday.

The aim of the Chair will be to conduct research on strategic issues pertaining to the armed forces, officials said

On February 15, 10 women officers from the Indian Army set sail from the Chennai Port for a gruelling journey from Chennai-Nizampatnam-Vizag-Nizampatnam-Chennai by sea. They have not only charted a new course in the history of the Indian Army but also made the country proud. Shattering all possible glass ceilings, making their own mark and setting new benchmarks, these women completed a successful expedition and proved their mettle.

The 10-day long expedition was led by Major Mukta Gautam, and the crew comprised Major Priya Semwal, Major Priya Das, Major Rashmil Sangwan, Major Arpita Dwivedi, Major Sanjana Mittal, Captain Jyoti Singh, Captain Malvika Rawat, Captain Shubham Solanki, and Captain Sonal Goyal.

The women covered a distance of nearly 900 nautical miles, marking this voyage as the first-ever sailing expedition undertaken by the all-women crew of the Indian Army, after the Navika Sagar Parikrama by the Indian Navy in 2018.
