World Record : India’s largest camera-tap tiger census : 2020

75% of world tiger population now in India

India’s tiger census of 2018 has entered the Guinness Book of World Records for being the largest ever camera-trap wildlife survey conducted anywhere in the world.

According to the survey, the country was home to an estimated 2,967 tigers, nearly 75 per cent of the global population. Of all the big cats, 2,461 (around 83 per cent) have been photo-captured.

Apart from setting a new world standard, the results validated India’s efforts in tiger conservation. The country’s tiger population increased by roughly one-third, from 2,226 in 2014 to 2,927 in 2018 .

The NSF is the top American body supporting fundamental research on non-medical fields of science. It has a budget of USD 7.4 billion .

India’s First Trans-Polar Flight to the North Pole, by the IAF : June 2003

The Indian Air Force (IAF) was the first Indian mission to reach the true North Pole and complete ‘ Exercise Cooperative Cope Thunder 2003 ‘ .

A 14-member team of the IAF, led by the pilot on on the mission – Group Captain S R K Nair on the IAF’s IL-76 reached the true North Pole on June 19th, 2003.

The aircraft reached over the true North Pole on June 19th, 2003 at 18:45 GMT (June 20, 00:15 IST).

This unique feat has not yet been repeated by any IAF Pilot or IAF team till date.

Notes:

Subsequently a Boeing 777 of Air India achieved the same feat.

Actress Radhika Apte’s directorial debut short film ‘The Sleepwalkers’ has won the ‘The Best Midnight Short Award’ at Palm Springs International Short Fest, USA.

The short film stars Shahana Goswami and Gulshan Devaiah and is centred on the subject of sleepwalking.
