Mithali Raj becomes first woman to play in six World Cups

One of the game’s finest servants, India captain Mithali Raj on Sunday became only the third cricketer and the first woman to appear in six World Cups, joining the iconic Sachin Tendulkar and Pakistani great Javed Miandad.

She achieved the feat as India locked horns with arch-rivals Pakistan in their much-anticipated opening match of the ICC Women’s World Cup at the Bay Oval here.

Raj, a 39-year-old veteran of many memorable matches, had made her maiden World Cup appearance in 2000, before playing the event in 2005, 2009, 2013, 2017 and now in 2022.

In the women’s game, the Indian batter surpassed former New Zealand cricketer Debbie Hockley and Charlotte Edwards of England.

Fast bowler Jhulan Goswami, Raj’s India teammate for the longest time, stands second on the list with five World Cup appearance.

Tendulkar, the holder of innumerable batting records, is the only Indian cricketer apart from Raj to feature in six World Cups, starting from 1992 to the triumphant campaign in 2011.

Elorda Boxing Cup 2022: Alfiya Pathan, Gitika Strike Gold; India Finish With 14 Medals

India won two gold, two silver and 10 bronze on the final day. India sent 33 boxers for the inaugural edition of Elorda Boxing Cup.

Reigning Youth World champions Alfiya Pathan and Gitika produced sensational performances to win gold medals at the inaugural edition of the Elorda Boxing Cup in Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan on Monday.

Two other female boxers — Kalaivani Srinivasan and Jamuna Boro — signed off with silver medals.

With the addition of two gold, two silver and 10 bronze on the final day, the 33-member Indian contingent concluded its campaign with an overall tally of 14 medals.

Meanwhile, Jamuna, the 2019 World Championships Bronze medallist, went down to Uzbekistan’s Nigina Uktamova 0-5 in the 54kg final.

Among men, Kuldeep Kumar (48kg), Ananta Chopade (54kg), Sachin (57kg) and Jugnoo (92kg) claimed bronze medals while Jyoti Gulia (52kg), Sakshi (54kg), Sonia Lather (57kg), Neema (63kg), Lalita (70kg) and Babita Bisht (81kg) were the six bronze medallists in the women’s category.

The tournament witnessed top players in action from countries such as India, Uzbekistan, hosts Kazakhstan, Cuba, China, and Mongolia.

India captain Jasprit Bumrah bludgeoned a hapless Stuart Broad for 29 runs to create a world record for maximum runs off a single over in Test cricket, beating the legendary Brian Lara’s feat by one run.

The world record stayed with Lara for 18 years — he had hit South African left-arm spinner Robin Peterson for 28 runs in a Test match in 2003-04, which included four fours and two sixes off six legal deliveries.

Indian wrestlers clinch eight medals in U-15 Asian Wrestling Championship

The Indian Under-15 Greco Roman Wrestling Team clinched two gold, two silver and four bronze medals in the Under-15 Asian Wrestling Championship being held at Bahrain.

On Saturday bouts in all 10 weight categories of Greco Roman Style were held and India clinched a total of 8 medals. The medal winners are, Sachin in the 68 kg, while Abhay in the 72 kg bagged gold medals in their respective categories.

While Pranay Choudhary bagged silver in 52 kg and Varun Kumar in 62 kg category. Varun Sonkar (38 kg), Aditya Kumar (48 kg), Tushar Patil (57 kg) and Hardeep (85 kg) bagged bronze medals in their respective categories.

Iran clinched Asia Title with 205 Points while Kazakhstan was runner-up with 192 Points and India secured 3rd place as they gained 172 Points. On Sunday bouts in all 10 weight categories of women’s wrestling will be held.

Gold for Srihari, Mihir and Aneesh

Olympian Srihari Nataraj, Mihir Ambre and Aneesh Gowda won golds in the 17 ^th Singapore National swimming championships here on Thursday.

National record holder Nataraj clocked 55.32s for the 100m backstroke gold while Ambre produced a personal best 24.66s for the 50m butterfly title. Meanwhile, Gowda won the 800m freestyle gold in 8:14.08s.

In the women’s section, Olympian and national record holder Maana Patel bagged the 100m backstroke silver.

India grabs maiden compound mixed team gold in archery World Cup

India won its maiden World Cup gold in compound mixed team archery event after the duo of Abhishek Verma and Jyothi Surekha Vennam outclassed their experienced French opponents at the Stage 3 edition here on Saturday.

Riding on a spectacular start, the Indians withered late resistance from the French pair of Jean Boulch and 48-year-old Olympic medallist Sophie Dodemont to seal the contest 152-149, a first-ever World Cup gold for India in the compound mixed team event .

The gold also opened the account of Indian archers, who have assured a second medal in the women’s recurve team event where the trio of Deepika Kumari, Ankita Bhakat and Simranjeet Kaur will fight for the yellow metal on Sunday.

National Kiteboarding championship to be held in Tuticorin from June 27

“Tuticorin is one of India’s windiest coast making it an ideal arena to conduct wind-based water sports and bringing together some of the best athletes from the country to train and compete”, said YAI President Admiral Karambir Singh

The third edition of the National Kiteboarding Championship will be held here from Monday.

The event will see over 50 athletes from all over the country competing for top honours, a press release said here.

The regatta will be governed by the rules as defined in the Racing Rules of Sailing.

Lisa Sthalekar to be first woman president of international cricketers’ association

Former Australia international Lisa Sthalekar is the first woman appointed president of the Federation of International Cricketers’ Associations.

Sthalekar, who played for the Australian women’s team from 2001 to 2013 before becoming a broadcast commentator, has replaced Vikram Solanki as president, FICA announced Tuesday.

‘New phase of the game’

“We are entering a new phase of the game which covers more cricket than ever before for our male and female players,” the 42-year-old Sthalekar said in a statement. “More countries are playing the game, which demonstrates that cricket is certainly becoming a global game.

PM Modi flags off first-ever torch relay for Chess Olympiad

In nearly 100 years of the history of the Chess Olympiad, it’s the first time that India will be hosting the prestigious event.

The international chess body, FIDE, for the very first time has instituted the torch relay, which is part of the Olympic tradition, but was never done in the Chess Olympiad.

FIDE President Arkady Dvorkovich handed over the torch to the prime minister who gave it to the legendary Viswanathan Anand.

The torch will be taken to 75 cities in a span of 40 days before arriving in Mahabalipuram near Chennai. At every location, chess grandmasters of the state will receive the torch.

Leh, Srinagar, Jaipur, Surat, Mumbai, Bhopal, Patna, Kolkata, Gangtok, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Thrissur, Port Blair and Kanyakumari are among the 75 cities.

In nearly 100 years of the history of the Chess Olympiad, it’s the first time that India will be hosting the prestigious event. With 188 countries registered for the upcoming Olympiad, the country is set to witness a huge congregation of nations for a sporting event for the first time on Indian soil.

Battle scars fail to deter Indian Army’s para-rowers from winning medals

Both of them lost their left foot to a landmine during counter-insurgency operations in Nowshera, Jammu. It meant they had to change their respective sports. Narayana K was a canoeist while Kuldeep Singh used to play volleyball before the injuries were sustained.

Both switched to rowing on the advice of Colonel Gaurav Dutta, chairman of the Para-Rowing Commission, Rowing Federation of India (RFI). Since the switch, the army duo has never looked back.

They started with a bronze at the PR3 M2- (men’s coxless pair) at the World Rowing Cup 2 in Poznan, Poland in 2019. They followed it up with another bronze at the Asian Rowing Championships in Chungju, South Korea in the same year in PR3 Mixed4+ with Jyoti and Kritika.

Narayana and Kuldeep returned to Poznan to compete in the 2022 edition of the World Cup and they made sure that they finished on the podium. The duo finished third behind rowers from France and Ukraine in PR3 M2- with the timing of 7:33.35.

Besides, the Indian Men’s Eight (M8+) and Women’s Eight (W8+) also entered Finals A and finished fifth in their respective races.
