** Jharkhand’s Ankita and Komalika secure top two spots in National Ranking Archery Tournament

Jharkhand’s Ankita Bhakat and Komalika Bari grabbed two top spots in senior women’s recurve division on the opening day of the 2nd 2022 National Ranking Archery Tournament at NIT ground in Adityapur, Seraikela-Kharsawan on Sunday.

Ankita and Komalika, both cadets of Tata Archery Academy in Jamshedpur, continued with their form with some stellar shooting over 70 m distance. The former scored 659 (330+320) to ace the ranking round while the bespectacled Komalika garnered 357 ( (324+334) to finish second. Olympian Deepika Kumari, who represented Petroleum Sports Promotion Board (PSCB) managed third place with a score of 655 (324+331).

Jharkhand’s Simpy Kumari, Anita Kumari, Vicky Kumar Dubey and Rohit Kumar Sharma, Pramila Bhumij, Reena Kumari, Mrinal Chouhan, Krishna Swansi, Pawan Khalko, Babita Kumari and Pranjal have all slipped into the top 32.

In the men’s recurve round, Jharkhand veteran and Olympian Jayanta Talukdar finished fourth with a score of 668 (337+331). Olympian Atanu Das, a graduate of Tata archery cradle who donned PSPB jersey topped the list with a score of 678 (338+340), ahead of his Maharashtra counterparts Parth Sushant Salunkhe and Yashdeep Bhoge who scored 673 (331+342) and 670 (333+337), respectively.

In the men’s compound division, Rajat Chouhan of All India Police Sports Control Board (AIPSCB) topped the list with a score of 712 (356+356). He edged out Rishabh Yadav of Haryana and Prathamesh Samadhan Jawkar of Maharashtra who scored 710 (357+353) and 708 (352+356) to finish second and third, respectively.

Competition in women’s compound division saw Rajasthan’s Priya Gujjar topping the list with a score of 705 (351+354) with Muskan Kirar of Madhya Pradesh 703 (349+353) and Rajasthan’s Swati Dudhwal 701 (349+352) finishing second and third respectively. also secured top 32 slots.

Sufiya was supported on her run by her husband, who drove the support car, took care of her nutrition and physiotherapy and managed her schedule. Besides this, local runners and cyclists joined her at various stretches of her journey.

On Saturday, she was certified as the “fastest female to run along The Indian Golden Quadrilatrel Road.”

** Mirabai Chanu: Weightlifter is 2021 BBC Indian Sportswoman of the Year

Weightlifter Mirabai Chanu has won the BBC Indian Sportswoman of the Year award for 2021, following a public vote.

The Olympic silver medallist beat golfer Aditi Ashok, boxer Lovlina Borgohain, Para-shooter Avani Lekhara, and badminton player PV Sindhu to the award.

Chanu became the first Indian weightlifter to win a silver medal at an Olympic Games, when she finished second in the 49kg category in Tokyo.

Ace Indian shuttler P V Sindhu notched up her second women’s singles title of the season with a straight game win over Thailand’s Busanan Ongbamrungphan in the summit clash of the Swiss Open Super 300 badminton tournament in Basel on Sunday.

Playing her second successive final in the tournament, Sindhu, a double Olympic medallist, took 49 minutes to get the better of the fourth seeded Thai 21-16 21-8 at the St. Jakobshalle in Basel.

Darshan Singh (Services) and Varsha Devi (Railways) finally kept their tryst with the men’s and women’s crowns in the National Cross Country Championships by winning their 10km events in the picturesque but tough course, made more challenging by 60 per cent humidity and gusts of wind, here on Saturday.

Having played key roles in their respective team’s victories, their joy was enhanced even more as they claimed the South Asian titles as the second SAFF Cross Country Championships was run concurrently. They tasted international success on appearance, having had to miss out on the 2020 competition in Sri Lanka – postponed at first and then moved here.

** Shashwat Rao wins Snow Marathon in Lahaul, Dolma Tenzin first among women

Shashwat Rao of Karnataka won the Snow Marathon with a timing of 4:41:07, here on Saturday. Meanwhile, in the women’s category, local girl Dolma Tenzin was the fastest and she completed her race in five hours and five minutes, thirty seconds.

Snow Marathon Lahaul, conceptualised by Event Founder Guarav Schimar and organised by Reach India and supported by the District Administration of Lahaul and Spiti district (Himachal Pradesh) saw the participation of over 100 sportsmen and women.

“This was the first time that a snow marathon was organised in the country. Till now, snow marathons were conducted in countries of the cold icy regions such as the polar circles, Antarctica, Russia and northern Europe. With Snow Marathon Lahaul, India not only stepped into the elite club of countries where Snow Marathons are organised but by organising it at an elevation of above 10,000 feet, it now holds the distinction of organising a snow marathon at the highest altitude,” said Gaurav.

In the 21 kilometres – Half Marathon category, Rohan stood first in the men’s section with two hours 53 minutes while amongst the women, the title went to Diksha, who clocked two hours 59 minutes.

The ten-kilometre run was won by Daulat Ram who took one hour and four minutes while Hemlata placed first in her category who covered the distance in one hour and twenty minutes. Navneet emerged as winner in the five-kilometer category while Shrishti grabbed the title in women’s category.

In view of creating enthusiasm among locals for running, a one-kilometer race was also organised wherein a massive participation from children and women was seen. The brand ambassador of the marathon – Kieren D’Souza also graced the occasion and ran 10 kms along with the participants.

Overall, the Indian contingent won six medals on the day and set two Asian records, thanks to the efforts of Ramudri in the long jump men T64 final and Paralympian Dharambir in discus wheelchair men F51 final.

Ms. Priyanka from Vijayawada holds a record of six gold medals from all the three standard, rapid and blitz U-10 Asian Youth Chess Championships held at Hikkaduwa in Sri Lanka. She also won gold medals at various international championships.

** 13 year old Mumbai autistic girl swims across Palk Strait, sets record

The swimming commenced at 4.22 am on Sunday from Talaimanar and concluded at Dhanushkodi at 5.32 pm.

A 13-year-old Maharashtra girl suffering from Autistic spectrum disorder has set a new record by swimming across the Palk Strait from Talaimannar in Sri Lanka to Dhanuskodi in Tamil Nadu, covering a distance of 29 km in 13 hours and 10 minutes on Sunday.

By achieving the feat, Jiya Rai, daughter of Master Chief of Arms of INS Kunjali, became the youngest and fastest female swimmer in the world to swim across the Palk Strait. The previous record was held with Bhula Chowdhary who covered the distance in 13 hours and 52 minutes in 2004. The swimming commenced at 4.22 am on Sunday from Talaimanar and concluded at Dhanushkodi at 5.32 pm. The event was conducted and guided by the Para-Swimming Federation of India (PSFI).
